Nike 6.0 is bringing world-class BMX to the Huntington Beach Pier during the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing, July 23 to 26. Staged against the backdrop of the world’s largest professional surfing competition, the first-ever Nike 6.0 HB BMX Pro is a uniquely-formatted “park event,” featuring 20 invited riders – including many of the 2008 Dew Tour’s Top 10 and 5 “peoples choice” wildcards. “It’s an honor for Nike 6.0 to be part of an event of this caliber,” said
Mark Losey, Nike 6.0 BMX Mentor.
“The US Open provides a great platform to showcase top BMX talent, and the course and format of the contest will produce incredible riding every day of the event.” Picking up where last year’s soul bowl left off, Nike 6.0 continues to showcase BMX, bringing a creatively engineered park course to Huntington Beach. An exciting format of three qualification rounds, with the chance to accumulate points and cash at every stage, guarantees the world’s best BMX riders will be taking their skills to the next level.
The top 10 riders with the most accumulated points will proceed to the finals, vying for a $30,000 cash purse. Over $10,000 will be distributed during qualification rounds for a total purse of $40,800.
Dennis Enarson, Rob Darden, Marcus Tooker, and
Garrett Reynolds are slated to compete and automatic invites have already gone out to the remaining top 10 Dew Tour park riders of 2008. Collectively this group will vote for five additional riders. The final five contestants will be chosen by global BMX fans via an online contest hosted by Vitalbmx.com. The 5 riders with the most votes will receive the “peoples choice” wildcard entry, competing against the worlds top BMX athletes. Riders will compete Thursday- Saturday to qualify for the Finals on Sunday.
“IMG is thrilled to join with Nike 6.0 in bringing this unique BMX event to the U.S. Open of Surfing,” said
James Leitz, Vice President of IMG Action Sports, the event producer.
“Although we’ve showcased BMX for the past nine years, Nike 6.0 is poised to take the action up a notch with world-class riders and a custom-built park.” More information is available at usopenofsurfing.com.
