with good reason. Laura Smulders has won the World Cup competition five times, and has won bronze in the London Olympics (2012). But several elite riders will be challenging the Netherlands native for the crown. Some women to watch include talented Swiss rider Zoé Claessens, who finished second at the 2022 UCI BMX World Championships and was number two in overall rankings last season.
After the first two World Cup rounds of this season (June 3 to 4), Alise Willoughby and Bethany Shriever have also established themselves as the riders to watch, holding the first two ranking positions. Shriever opened the races by securing two consecutive wins, bringing the rankings thus far to:
1. Bethany Shriever (GBR) 1000
2. Alise Willoughby (USA) 800
3. Molly Simpson (CAN) 636
4. Laura Smulders (NED) 605
5. Zoe Claessens (SUI) 558
Men Rankings
In the Men’s Elite category, Sylvain André is the man to beat. Winning last year, the Frenchman also has the 2018 world championship under his belt, which he won by finishing ahead of Izaac Kennedy and Cameron Wood. The Australian and American riders will be looking to reclaim their glory this season. Dutchman Niek Kimmann is also a favorite alongside Swiss Simon Marquart, his training partner and 2021 World Cup gold medalist. After stages 1 and 2, we also have new entrants to the top position in Romain Mahieu, who won Round 1 and Joris Daudet. The rankings are as follows:
1. Romain Mahieu (FRA) 930
2. Jauris Daudet (FRA) 870
3. Diego Arboleda (COL) 572
4. Izaac Kennedy (AUS) 486
5. Niek Kimmann (NED) 446
Wrapping Up
BMX has a long and rich history, having started – in the form we know it today – in Los Angeles in 1969. Like previous seasons, UCI BMX 2023 will bring together the best of the best in the world of racing to battle it out for the honor of BMX champion. Laura Smulders and Sylvain André will try to defend their titles even as the other Elite riders fight for the number 1 spot. The remaining rounds will be held in France, and Argentina between 23 September and 14 October.
