The Red Bull Metro Pipe, a free and open event, will land underground on March the 24th and 25th Madrid, March 8th 2012 - A metro track in Madrid will hold, for the first time ever, one of the most important BMX international contests, the Red Bull Metro Pipe. Participants will compete in teams of two members and the Chamartín station will be the setting of what it’s likely to be the most exceptional event of the year in its field.
The competition will be divided in two parts: an Open Session (Saturday the 24th), with open applications online. The 30 finalist teams will be chosen after a level test the day of the

event. There will be two wild card entries at stake for the second part of the event, the Pro competition (Sunday the 25th). Here, ten pairs of riders from many different countries will take part of the event after being invited by the organizers. Spain is one of the strongest BMX countries in the world, with specialists like top dog Sergio Layos, but up until now Madrid has never held any urban sports event and the Red Bull Metro Pipe wants to change that by gathering some of the best athletes on Earth. Apart from the technique, style and adrenaline of the competition, the unusual scenery of the popular metro station will add emotion to the event.
The ten professional participants invited by the organizers will compete with a team mate they will personally choose freely, and this means that it could be another international rider or an anonymous colleague that will make the rest of the opponents panic. Once the twelve pairs of participants are established, they will have to ride at the same time, a novelty that will m

ake the event more complex. Up until now, there have been group events but not competitions with participants going out in pairs. Thus the BMX elite will have to prove that they can also excel in understanding with their team mates while fighting for victory and for the €5000 at stake for the best three teams.
Sergio Layos, who’s contributing to the design of the halfpipe that will be placed over the metro track, and also a member of the only Spanish team at the Red Bull Metro Pipe, feels very happy about the project:
“BMX travels all over the world to find new exciting places. In this case, everybody in Madrid knows the place and being able to have a competition here is simply fantastic,” he said and added:
“It’s been a long time since the last time such a big event was planned anywhere in the world and I’m sure this is gonna be completely gorgeous.” Besides, Layos’ team mate, a very experienced BMX rider who will remain anonymous until the event considered as “the best competition I’ll be taking part in my whole life.”
