We did a little walk around the facility and checked in with the Dutch camp, the Stay Strong booth and shook some hands left and right. The Dutch had done well on Saturday and things were looking good for Sunday as well. Riders were in new uniforms which had some new sponsors printed on them. New 2014 bikes were being used and things looked dialled. The track was spectacular, or should I say, there were many crashes. The Zolder track will be the circuit of the 2015 UCI BMX Race World Championships so this was a great rehearsal for next year's race. One thing we need to compliment them on is the live feed, a job well done there for fans who could not make it over to Belgium themselves.
The track had an 8 meter and a 5 meter starting hill. The Junior/Elites were bombing down the big hill towards the first 11 meter (?) double. It was all or nothing for the girls classes. The ones who were hanging on and clearing the distance, had a big advantage for the rest of the race as they made a gap of 10 meters instantly. The risk was to case the jump and make a big crash but rolling the first double meant you had no chance to win the race. The boys had less problems clearing the first jump side by side but the "Pro-section" on the second straight gave them enough problems to clear smoothly. The track needs some adjustments for next year if we want to see some more passing after the second straight. Make it at least two meters wider and the racing till the finish line will be more spectacular.
It was great to see the stands full of people, it makes for a good atmosphere. Throwing T-shirts and goodies in the crowd is always a good thing to fill the downtime. Maybe the MC-s could do a few interviews when there is a break from racing to keep people entertained. The lights went on when the last few finals got on the gate but it looks like they're missing a big pole of lights on the new side of the track where the 8 meter starting hill is. That would make the track even better.
Doing a race rundown of all classes is a bit useless now that people saw it live in Zolder, watched the livestream from home and read the results online. It was possible to watch the livestream at the track with the free provided wifi signal so if you did not have the perfect place to watch from, you could still bring up the race on your phone. Good job right there. Next race up: UCI SX Word Cup in Manchester. For those who did not get hurt, see you there.
