The finals of the BMX SUPERCROSS UCI World Cup took place at the tail end of Saturday afternoon in a highly-charged atmosphere. At the end of what was intolerable suspense, the Latvian Maris Stromberg, leader of the ranking, won this final event in style as well as snatching the world title. Finishing on 787 points, he dominated Australian
Sam Willoughby (656) and American
Fields Connor (586). However the Latvian, already a winner in Copenhagen, had to wait for the final to accept his crown.
“I am simply delighted!” he admitted over the microphone, clearly very moved by the occasion.
Among the female contingent, following on from the withdrawal of
Laetitia Le Corguillé due to a fall yesterday (fracture of two ribs and one finger),
Sarah Walker, world champion in 2009, took victory in the ev

ent. However, thanks to a lead racked up over the previous races, Laetitia Le Corguillé won the world title (679 pts) ahead of
Caroline Buchanan (512) and Sarah Walker (460).
“Naturally it’s a little disappointing not to have been able to compete in front of the French crowds, but I’m obviously very happy to win the title," she stated.
"By winning three of the four championship events, I had established a comfortable enough lead… which was fortunate! I was a little worried yesterday as I headed off to hospital on a stretcher. Today though, all’s well. It remains to be seen where I’m going to go on holiday…”
