NASS is a strange event in many ways. I love going as much as I hate going. I love going to hang out with friends, watch some good bike riding, get drunk & have good times. I hate going because the food is over-priced crap, I hate camping and the place is (apart from the BMX crowd) full of assholes. This years NASS was not any different.
Shaun, Chip & myself arrived at Shepton Mallet around 3pm on the Friday of the event. After finally getting passes sorted through the most bizarre system ever found where we were allowed to set up camp for the weekend. Now, I’ve NEVER slept in a tent let alone put one up so I wasn’t much help to Shaun as he busted out the bad boy 2 room tent complete with airbeds, table & chairs, camping stove, BBQ & pretty much everything we needed for the weekend.
No riding went down on the Friday so after we had some food from our badass BBQ we headed over to the Braun Airstream to meet up with friends for party time! 2 bottles of Jack & many hours later I was out for the count in the tent whilst Shaun went out grooming alone.

Good times. NASS is great. I woke at 5.30am in the tent & have NEVER been so cold in my life!!! I put on extra clothes & tried to get some more sleep. Man, I was sooooo cold. I hate NASS!
Anyway, Braun Spine quals. The report is here on the site direct from the Cruzer people so I won't repeat it all again but I will say the qualifying result was questionable with most people believing Harry Main should have qualified 1st instead of 3rd after straight up stomping the 7ft beast. Check out the video’s & judge for yourself.

After Braun Quals we busted into the “exhibition hall” where the Street/Park course was now located. This hall is a hell of a lot better than the old dirty, stinking pig shed it's usually in that’s for sure! 63 riders rode Street/Park Qualifiers with
Dhers, Webb, Main & Hennon taking the top spots for Sundays final. The course, built by the
Shaun Scarfe/Port-u-gays crew was pretty special, nice box, big “elvis” kicker, weird spine set up & plenty of other nibbles. For me
Ben Hennon was the highlight as always. Higher, faster and burlier than anyone else. He boosted the “elvis” at least 8ft out & went straight in a minimal 10ft 360 over the box, always amazing to watch Hennon ride & it looks as though now he is really back in the game.
Kyle Blake rode well in competition for once to make finals &
Watkinson threw down the barspin to whip at the end of his run too. From the 63 riders 20 went through to Sundays final. Nice. Lets party!
Remo turned up late Saturday & things got loose again. Another bottle of Jack (me), a bottle of Absolute (Remo) & a bucket of beers (anyone!), a drum & base party (Mmmm..?), a 1 armed girl (bizarre!) & a BBQ at 4am made for another great night. I love NASS. However, this event always brings about way too many assholes & with 8 guys trying to take out Remo who somehow managed to avoid certain death I realised actually, I hate NASS.

I woke at 1pm Sunday & had missed Dirt finals but made it over to MC Braun Cruzer finals. Again, the report is here on the site as are the videos so check them out. It sucked for
Dhers who got a puncture in his 2nd run which of course affected his scores but he proved what a great bike rider he is by jumping on
Harry Main’s bike & throwing down some big shit, 5-whip, no handed flair! This won't make Daniel feel any better though. If he had won this one he would have secured the overall title but as it was
Mark Webb took the win & it sets things up for a real showdown in Cologne in a few weeks where effectively winner takes all…. Ace!
We went from Mini to Vert. Why? Good question, I have no idea. Vert guys moan like hell there isn’t enough events for them & NASS tried to get rid of Vert but with a lot fighting BMX organiser
Shaun Scarfe had them keep it in albeit with a small purse & in the end 4 guys rode…. 4 fucking guys!
Shaun Egglington took the win with
Paul Jones, Officer
Mahoney & My Chemical
Elcock behind him Pah!
Then came Street/Park finals…. Well 3hrs of waiting until it could start sucked balls to be honest but it was worth it. 20 riders made the cut, 5 groups of 4 riders, jam format. As always. Highlights were of course
Webb (huge flair transfer)
Dhers (no handed flip-3)
Main (900!) &
Hennon (turndown to whip 360) but riders like
Mahoney (who finally stepped up his game!);
Blake & Miller were really up for it as well.
Watkinson’s 1st run didn’t go to plan but he shut things down 2nd time around, that kid doesn’t get the props he deserves.
Dean Cueson was rad as fuck too. The little 16yr old Demolition UK rider made finals @ FISE a few weeks back as he did here & never looks out of his depth, superman seat grab barspin, easy 7’s etc..
Webb had pretty much won the contest with a flawless, fast, burly, stomping 1st run but after nearly 6 months off his bike/taking it easy he was out of steam but it proved enough to take his 2nd finals win of the day. Nice one Mark, good to have you back.

I hadn’t showered for 2 days, I’d woke up freezing my nuts off in a tent, hadn’t slept well, not eaten well, lost my camera,
Remo nearly got pulverised by D&B “gangstas”, the crowds were weak &
Scott Hamlin had nearly snapped his head right off of his neck. I hate NASS.
But then again, I always had clean clothes & underwear on, had brushed my teeth & washed my face etc., I’d cooked the food I had eaten & not bought it from the conmen, the camera on my phone is better than the one I lost, Remo is alive, I never sleep well anyway, even if the crowds were weak I had just MC’d yet more amazing riding AND I just got a text off
Scott Hamlin say he’s ok, his collar bone is a mess & some serious bruising which will keep him off his bike for a few months but it could have been a lot worse. NASS is great.
