Not really known for its extensive riding architecture or large riding scene, Iceland may seem like an odd choice for a BMX street riding trip destination. So why would Bruno Hoffmann Colin Varanyak and I venture to this remote island country that hovers just below the Arctic Circle?
Colin wasn't even sure himself: “I didn't really know what to expect coming here; I didn't know what the weather was like or anything else."
However, thanks to some prior info I had received from conversations with Icelandic native and shredder Anton Arnarson, it sounded like a good gamble to see what Reykjavik had to offer. And what better time to go than during the couple of months when the sun literally never seems to fully disappear?
With a population of less than 120,000, it is amazing that there are any BMXers in Reykjavik at all. But the tight-knit scene is strong and thriving. Every day, Anton and his crew of friends would meet up with us and be ready to hit the streets to ride the regular offerings and find new ones yet to be hit. And there's a newer generation of excited young guns getting immersed in the BMX culture, thanks in part to Anton and his summer BMX classes held at local outdoor skateparks.
With some of the most incredible scenic landscapes less than a few hours away from Reykjavik – numerous stunning waterfalls, colourful peaked mountain ranges enveloped by fast-moving clouds, and public hot springs tucked away at the foot of mountains in the most remote areas imaginable – this might be one of the best summer destinations I've personally experienced.
It's safe to say Bruno felt the same: "The whole experience was amazing. We had a good crew to ride with, and topped it off with seeing all the scenic stuff, like waterfalls, hot springs. It's always nice to see the country and culture."
Colin was equally elated: "Because there was no expectations for the trip, everything was a surprise. The relaxed atmosphere here is awesome. And I probably saw some of the craziest sights I'd ever seen in my life. We did so much in one day. Thanks to Anton and the locals, who went out of their way to show us a good time."
Until next time then, Iceland; you're a country none of us will soon forget!
