A metro track transformed into a half pipe, the world’s best BMX riders and a noisy and devoted audience were the main ingredients of the pro competition of the Red Bull Metro Pipe, an event held in Madrid’s Chamartín station. The ten participant pairs delivered an incredible show in a challenging BMX track for more than 15,000 spectators that attended the contest throughout the weekend. After the first round, that saw some incredible tricks, the competition’s level rose in geometric progression during the semifinals, where the

four pairs put on really amazing performances, in terms of technique and synchronization. With such virtuosity the judges found it extremely difficult to decide who was going into the final.

The final catapulted Spain’s
David ‘Naran’ Peñafiel and Czech
Michael Beran to victory thanks to a refined technique and a perfect style and execution from ‘Naran’ in a Backflip Superman and from Beran in both a Flair Tailwhip and a Wallride Tailwhip. The pair’s victory was even more special because, as Beran said
“I’m recovering from an elbow injury I had four months ago, but ‘Naran’ invited me to compete here and I couldn’t say no. I didn’t think we could win, to be honest.” Beran added that
“the best thing of this contest is that it gives priority to creativity.”
Second were Spain’s
Perico and US’
Alistair Whitton and Britons
Kriss Kyle and
Jason Phelan were third.
The American rider
Tom Dugan fell off in the first round and was taken to hospital, where he’s recovering well.
Sergio Layos, as the event’s host, opted to be with his friend Dugan.
