A few weeks ago my old-skool bmx friend Bjorn Eulink called me to ride again at our old-skool skatepark at The Hulsbeek in Oldenzaal (check FAT Zine #00 1987 page 21). This concrete park has been around since 1979 (!) and is epic for the ‘snakerun’. Although some renovations are necessary (and planned) the park is still in reasonable shape. The surroundings of the skatepark is also epic, since it is in the middle of a recreation area with a small lake, sandy beaches, bbq spots and campings. So perfect to chill & grill.
A few weeks ago my old-skool bmx friend Bjorn Eulink called me to ride again at our old-skool skatepark at The Hulsbeek in Oldenzaal (check FAT Zine #1). The surroundings of the skatepark is also epic, since it is in the middle of a recreation area with a small lake, sandy beaches, bbq spots and campings. So perfect to chill & grill.
So what do you do if you want to ride with some old-skool bmx friends? Pick a date, inform your friends and hope for some decent weather. So after Bjorn Eulink called me for a session, we picked the first weekend of September, informed our old-skool friends, used some new-skool social media, invited a few people and hope for the best.
And the best is what we got! After weeks with lots of rain the weather forecast showed some dry weather for the first days of September. And that was also necessary, since the rain had washed a lot of mud onto the skatepark and it took a few hours on Friday to get the park ready for a day of bmx shredding. And the weather forecast was just perfect with 27°C but more important: DRY and sunny weather. So a lot of riders packed their bikes, beers, bbqs, bitches & beachwear and set track to the far east. Some (Gerrit Koornwinder) took a 100km detour, but had a good days together with his kids.
At the end of the day a lot of riders showed up and also some guys dusted off their bikes to ride again after years. From the big smile on Erik de Bruin all day long it showed that he still loved it. Guus joined with his converted cargo bike which is a true mobile sound system with integrated 18inch subwoofer and he took care of some chill tunes. The downhill snakerun is a lot of fun, but some always take it a step further. Mark Vos and Boy Janssen were boosting all day long and Daniel Wijsmuller has style for miles while going at max speed. So good!
After the riding and swimming, the BBQs were unpacked and after being relocated by the park manager “this is not an official bbq area” the grill session started, some people fell asleep (Dennis aka FC Twente) and the riding went on until well after sunset.
Vladdie de Koning called it the “Most chill and flowing jam of 2011”, which is a big compliment. I want to thank everybody for making this such a big success and we will certainly re-invite you all to some session(s) in 2012!
