Juniors star for Australia at BMX World Championships while team camp optimistic of two places in women's competition in Beijing. South Australian Sam Willoughby has snared the gold medal in the junior men's final at the UCI BMX World Championships in Taiyuan, China while in the junior women's final Lauren Reynolds scored silver and Rachael Bracken the bronze medal. In the elite women's competition Tanya Bailey's semi final berth should be enough to give Australia two starting places for women in the BMX at the Olympic Games.

Bailey lined up as Australia's only starter in the elite women's competition after a major knee injury during training put Melissa Mankowski out of the team and out of contention for Olympic selection. Nicole Callisto suffered an elbow fracture in yesterday's training session in Taiyuan and was forced to withdraw.

"We don't know how serious it is yet but the initial doctor's report is that it's not so bad," said Sharples.

Today the world championships took place in China. Here are the final results that count:

After the first two days of Amateur action in China, Redline’s Global Team riders have already scored their fair share of victories and podiums.
9-GIRLS/10-BOYS: The first Redline’r to stand atop the Worlds podium was 9 year old girl SAYA SAKAKIBARA. Living in Australia, but doin’ ir for Japan, “Sock-it-to-’Em” Saya scored Redline’s first (of many, we hope) win. Saya’s brother, KAI, kept the fastness in the family with a 4th in 10 Boys.

The American Bicycle Association hosted the Spring Nationals this past weekend, May, 23-25 in Albuquerque, NM. The Veloport/Duke City BMX Facility is the only the second BMX only facility built in the world and what a great place it is. The racing at the Spring National event was exciting to say the least! The Duke City BMX crew really stepped it up and had the facility in tip top shape and ready to race! This was the fifth PRO Series event of the season and the PRO Riders were excited to head to the high altitude of New Mexico to see who had the legs on the tour. 

With the Olympic Games in Beijing only two months away, the excitement for the debut of BMX Race is mounting daily. Among a strong group of contenders from both the men’s and women’s sides, two riders have emerged as the ones to watch as the US Team chases its dreams of Olympic Gold. For the men, the rider to watch is Mike Day. With a string of successes over the last three years including the 2005 NBL #1 Pro, 2005 UCI Worlds 2nd Place, 2006 UCI Worlds 3rd Place, and the 2007 UCI Supercross 1st Place, Mike has been on a tear leading up to Olympic qualification. The fastest rider on Olympic style tracks, Mike has won every time trial on the UCI Supercross circuit for the last year and a half. Crediting his monster speed to his longer than average legs, Mike also clocked the fastest time of any athlete on the Beijing Supercross track during last year's test races. To say he has an advantage there would be an understatement.
