Rio Olympic hopefuls Max Cairns and Lauren Reynolds have taken out the elite Oceania titles as torrential rain forced officials to cut short competition at the Subaru BMX National Championships at the Sleeman Sports Complex in Brisbane tonight. Racing under lights and tumbling rain on a soaked track, former prolific junior Cairns and 2012 Olympian Reynolds were declared the continental title winners, following the decision to abandon racing after the second of three motos and before any finals action.
Cairns clocked the quickest men’s elite time in the second moto to snare the biggest win of his senior career, edging out fellow Rio aspirants Bodi Turner and Josh Callan. Reynolds grabbed the women’s victory ahead of world number one Caroline Buchanan and rising star Rachel Jones.
Earlier in the night, with an eye on the future, world men’s elite champion Sam Willoughby, out of contention for the national series crown, withdrew from competition without starting a race,
