Pull magazine made a quick drive to Vegas to visit the 2017 USA BMX National #1 Pro, Monster Energy/Chase's Connor Fields.
The annual review of the rules is one of the most important processes USA BMX conducts each year. Throughout the year we collect a number of ideas and feedback from our membership and tracks. These rule suggestions are then carefully analyzed by our staff with decades of BMX experience. While we’re always working to implement policies and programs to grow our sport (like the BMX Racing League), we also shoulder the responsibility of being the stewards of BMX in North America.
Below you’ll find short explanations of rule changes for 2019. As always, please refer to the 2019 USA BMX Rule Book for exact wording of the rules.
Foreign Riders
Because of the quality of event and outstanding competition, more and more international riders are coming to USA BMX national events. As such, some clarification needed to be added for these riders. We have added the following:
Foreign amateur riders (UCI Challenge Class) are NOT required to purchase an amateur membership but are required to complete a membership application. That rider will be able to compete for the award of the day, and will NOT receive any ranking points. Should a foreign rider wish to compete for any USA BMX ranking program, they must purchase a full membership.

Expanding its leadership and product offering in performance bicycle pedals, Shimano introduces its first ever BMX-specific SPD pedal that is tuned specifically for racing. Following in the footsteps of the winning DXR component line, the new PD-MX70 pedals have been tested and raced at every level from the local start gate to the Olympic track. Factoring in the high pedaling forces of BMX racing, the new PD-MX70’s feature a dedicated high-retention mechanism that prevents unclipping under extreme upward pedaling force as well as a narrow, 9-degree release angle and 2-degree free float for a more fixed and stable feeling.

Bas de Bever, national coach of the national BMX selection, leaves the KNWU at the end of this year. De Bever has been working for the KNWU since 2003.National coach Bas de Bever has been through three Olympic cycles during his 15-year employment. The Olympic Games in Beijing (2008), London (2012) and Rio de Janeiro (2016). Under his wing, many successes have been achieved, such as national, European and world titles, World Cup podium and overall victory. At the Olympic level the bronze medal of Laura Smulders (London, 2012) and silver medal of Jelle van Gorkom (Rio de Janeiro, 2016).
Bas de Bever: "Coaching is a fantastic profession, it is great to be able to give athletes direction in their development through knowledge transfer. Because you work with people, it is also a complex subject in which you are juggling with many factors on an individual level to allow the athlete to develop in the right way in the pursuit of his / her goals. This is also the challenge for me, but also gives me the necessary stress over time. In this course you will also deal with factors that lie outside your core business (coaching). I noticed that especially these factors gave me (after 15 years) too much negative energy and disturbed the balance for a long time in a way that this was also taking its toll on a personal level. I have written a fantastic chapter in my own 'book of life' in these 15 years. I will regularly read this chapter with great pleasure. My feeling says that now is the time for a new chapter. "
