In BMX racing new gear every year is sometimes a necessity. One crash in the asphalt turn or at full speed on the first straight can result in plenty of holes in the jersey and marks on the pants that even the best washing detergent cannot make disappear. In a bad year, you might even need a few kits to get through the season. In Motocross the top stars seem to have a new kit-design at every Supercross they enter. It's a way for the manufacturers to show their new (colour) lines to the public and through the media it ends up in front of the eyes of many out there. Although BMX specialised racing gear does exist, looking at the MX brands is something that is and should be done. Their kits are good looking and would work for BMX as well. Maybe you do not need the leather pads on the inside of the knees but racing pants these days are made to have the protection gear underneath and are made of fabric that stretches in all directions.
