There has always been a connection between Motocross and BMX. In fact, motocross was the inspiration for BMX to start with. The handlebars, the bike control, the feeling, there are a lot of similarities, but also a lot of differences. Where the dirt bike gets controlled by the right wrist, the bike needs to be pedaled for speed and thrown around by all muscles in the body. 2024 FIM 250 World Champion Kay de Wolf and 2025 3rd place finisher in the MXGP class Glenn Coldenhoff joined a session at Area 51 in Eindhoven, set up by Philip de Jong. Bart Nelissen and his brother Mark joined as well as Tom van den Bogaard who managed to show a trick or two to the world class motocross racers.
Kay de Wolf’s Factory Husqvarna was traded in for a Mankind loaner. Glenn brought his own Meybo, which he had not touched since a corona session at the Flame Trails, and also preferred a freestyle bike instead. Just rolling around the park getting used to the bike and the ramps was nice. Area51 has a lot to offer and steps can be made quickly.
On Sunday, December 14, the Skateland BMX Open took place at Skateland Rotterdam. Around 35 riders participated in the event, divided into a pro and an amateur category. Seven riders competed in the pro class, with the remaining riders entering the amateur category. The BMX Open combined a traditional contest format with runs and a jam format, where riders judged each others runs. During the jam sessions, riders were evaluated on their progression compared to their initial scores, under the supervision of international judge Stuart Gibson and MC Thomas van Bemmelen.
The BMX Open was all about community and good vibes. The atmosphere remained positive throughout the day, with riders and spectators spread across the park.

On Saturday, December 13, the Dutch National BMX Street Championship took place at Skateland Rotterdam. The KNWU-sanctioned national championship brought together 16 pro riders and attracted around one hundred spectators throughout the day. With a recently updated course and a strong competitive atmosphere, Skateland once again confirmed its role as the permanent home of the Dutch BMX Street Nationals. Defending champion Mika Bunkers attempted to retain his title but ultimately finished in fifth place. One of the highlights of the event was the return of former winner Joeri Veul, who, after years of rehabilitation following a cerebral hemorrhage, impressively claimed a spot on the podium with a third-place finish. The national title ultimately went to Kimo van Hulst from Heinkenszand.
