The 2014 UCI BMX World Championships Rotterdam have ended in heartbreak for defending champion Caroline Buchanan on a day that was marred by a series of high profile crashes. Having rode a fantastic Time Trial the day before to grab the silver medal, the defending champ was left battered and bruised after crashing during her last heat earlier in the day, and was 50-50 as to whether or not she would even be able to continue racing having already qualified for the quarter final. 
It was an electric atmosphere inside Ahoy stadium in Rotterdam for the final day of the UCI BMX World Championships, with the crowd treated to some breathtaking racing, thrills and spills and high drama. Australian Olympic silver medalist Sam Willoughby, fresh off his Time Trial crown on Saturday breezed through the early rounds and looked particularly sharp, with the 2012 world champion a man on a mission after crashing out last year.
Team USA Cycling collected three more silver medals as the 2014 UCI BMX World Championships concluded on Sunday with the Supercross finals. Shealen Reno (Plano, Texas/Hyper Bicycles) and Sean Gaian (Santee, Calif./GT Bicycles) placed second in the junior races while Alise Post (St. Cloud, Minn./Redline) raced to silver in the elite women's contest. After five days of competing in Rotterdam, Team USA tallied 21 medals in the challenge class, cruiser class, elite and junior competitions.
"I'm unbelievably proud of all of our athletes," said USA Cycling's National BMX Coach James Herrera. "We had a great medal tally at the world championships this year and I'm super proud to see our junior riders and challenge class riders that are coming up through the ranks. We've got an incredibly bright future."

Team USA Cycling earned three medals on Saturday as the elite and junior competitions got underway at the 2014 UCI BMX World Championships. Corben Sharrah (Tucson, Ariz./Haro Bicycles) and Collin Hudson (Longmont, Colo./Redline) earned silver medals in their Time Trial Superfinals while Shealen Reno (Plano, Texas/Hyper Bicycles) grabbed a bronze.ELITE MEN
In the elite men's time test, Sharrah completed the course with a time of 24.819 to earn his silver hardware. He was second to gold medalist Sam Willoughby (AUS) who posted a 24.757. Frenchman Joris Daudet secured the podium's final step with his time of 24.924. Three Americans posted top ten times among elite men: Jared Garcia (Victorville, Calif./Supercross BMX) in sixth, reigning U.S. national champion Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev./ Chase/Monster) in seventh, and Justin Posey (Winston-Salem, N.C./Dan’s Comp) in ninth.
The Australian’s are proving unstoppable in Rotterdam as more winners are crowned overnight. Day four of the UCI BMX World Championships in Rotterdam provided an opportunity for our elite Australian riders to rehearse for racing on Sunday in the time trial. Olympic silver medalist Sam Willoughby could not have made a greater statement by winning the time trial in stunning fashion, edging out American Corben Sarrah by 0.62 seconds on what was a highly entertaining evening at the Ahoy Stadium in Rotterdam, with Australia’s Bodi Turner finishing in tenth.
Defending World Champion Caroline Buchanan rode fantastically to finish in second just 0.22 seconds outside top spot, however her form suggests she will be the one to catch come finals time on Sunday.
