Where else but Montpellier—la ville fidèle to the spirit of urban sports—to host the opening round of the 2025 UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup? Since 1997, this Mediterranean gem has welcomed no fewer than 28 major urban sports festivals, and this year was no exception. As part of the emblematic Festival des Sports Extrêmes (FISE), the city once again came alive, offering a thrilling stage for the Park, Street, Spine Mini and Flatland disciplines. Over the course of a week, an estimated 300,000 spectators were treated to a veritable spectacle of talent, adrenaline, and sheer artistry on two wheels.
BMX Park Men: La crème de la crème under the sun
To ensure fair and ample practice time for all, the Men’s Park event imposed a cut at 72 riders—a practical choice, and a nod to the professionalism that defines this sport at its highest level. After the pause following December’s UCI Urban Cycling World Championships in Abu Dhabi, riders returned revitalized, their arsenals of tricks freshly sharpened and ready to be unveiled on this prestigious stage.
The gods of weather smiled upon Montpellier. Despite the heat—intense, almost Provençal in its brilliance—the skies stayed dry, and support crews came prepared à la française, armed with coolers, baguettes, sunglasses, and parasols.

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and its partner Hurricane are pleased to announce the dates and hosts of the rounds of the 2025 UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup. The first round of the series will start at the end of May in Montpellier, in the south of France, as part of the Festival International des Sports Extrêmes (FISE), an event that attracts half a million people every year. The second round will be held in October in Shanghai, China's most populous city with more than 24 million inhabitants, which hosts the event for the second consecutive year. The 2025 UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup will conclude the following month in Sakai, Japan, a city in the Osaka metropolitan area on the island of Honshū. The Japanese competitions will take place indoors.
In an Olympic year that featured both Olympic Qualifier Series events in Hungary and China as well as the Games in Paris, the BMX Freestyle community also navigated a packed UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup season. This three-stop tour launched in Japan, moved to France, and concluded in Shanghai, China, showcasing both Park and Flatland disciplines. Heading into the Shanghai finals, France’s Anthony Jeanjean (Park Men) and Laury Perez (Park Women) held the lead in their categories, while Japan’s Yu Shoji and Nina Suzuki led the Flatland rankings. However, with 1,000 points still up for grabs, the final standings were still undecided.
