The Kapermolen park has been around for many years and it proves that building a concrete park works. Years after years the park holds up to the riding and the weather and with the BBO happening at this spot, the city of Hasselt should be proud of their investment. Some of the ramps aren't the best in the business (try jumping that box) but it's there and it does the job. Add a flatland section, a miniramp for everyone to use and dirt jumps and you'll have a perfect venue for an allround freestyle comp.
Let's start off with the dirt jump comp. The high Red Bull tower provided enough speed for the two double jumps that followed. The last jump was more of a spine jump with a platform of only 50 cm. The trick was to either send it to the moon, jump sideways, or scrub the hell out of it like Alex Stinshof did. It looked great and had the style lovers in the crowd go crazy. Like Alex, more riders were riding brakeless and had four pegs. In fact, a whole bunch of (German) street riders decided to ride dirt as did Benoit v.d. Geuchte (BEL). The jumps weren't crazy hard which also allowed for a 12+ Am category to take place which was won by Jari Roggeveen (NED). Kenneth Tancré (BEL) and Markus Reuss (GER) were ripping it up in the final. The best run out of three runs counted towards the final score. Markus Reuss trucked into the roll-in followed by a super high and stylish 360 on the first set and cruised to the end to grab the win.
Kenneth however was firing off barspin 720-s and flipwhips like it was nothing and got 2nd in Dirt. Holland's Tom Selbeck scored a podium with a no-handed flip on the first set followed by a 360-x-up to x-up and a No-hander ET on the last jump. Dirt is always a good show.
On Saturday night rumours were going around that Matthias Dandois (FRA) and Viki Gomez (ESP) were going to come over for the Pro Flatland comp on Sunday. And indeed they showed up. Viki lives in Luxemburg which is 'only' a two hour drive. Matthias got up early after putting on a jam in Paris on Saturday and made his way to Hasselt in time to get some practice in. Pro Flatland really had a decent turn out at the BBO, even Francois Desgain (BEL) made it. After qualification 8 riders made it to the final. The people in Hasselt got to witness the best flatland riding in the world on a sunny afternoon and the enjoyment was in the air. Clearly it was a battle between Viki Gomez and Matthias Dandois for the win. Viki has variety, originality and difficulty that he brings to the flat area time after time. Matthias has the flow, style, spins and brings flair to the comp. The fresh World Champ brought his A-Game to Hasselt and the short night was already forgotten. Flatland is awesome. In the end Dandois won over Gomez and Sietse van Berkel (NED) finished third.
The street section at the concrete park in Hasselt circles around the pool. With flatbanks, ledges, rails, and stairs there's something around without having to look for it. Daniel Portoreal (GER) has so much bike control it's ridiculous. After getting max speed, he manualed around the entire park befor hopping into a hang-5 to half-lash into the bank.
It was insane to see that happen. Daniel collected 477 points from the 5 judges and had a good lead over second place finisher Niels Mertens (BEL). Niels got awarded the Pro Street Belgian National jersey that he now has to wear at all street competitions for a year (just kidding). Third place was for all rounder Leon Hoppe who rode Dirt and Park as well and is good at everything. Railride upwards to double bars off! Dirt winner Reuss got 4th with Nico Vanloon (GER) rounding up the top 5.
Park riders basically started off in the pool in the middle of the park and then continued to hit up some transition in the rest of the park. Maybe not ideal but it works like that every year. The crowd on Sunday was fairly decent and they saw Dome Freigang (GER) get third with a double whip over the channel in the bowl and a barspin to no-hander over the hip. Daniel Wedemeijer (NED) and Kenneth Tancré (BEL) had their minds set on the win in Hasselt. Kenneth flipwhipped out of the
bowl into the bank and continued at full speed to flip the box and to double downside whip the hip in the far corner. Kenneth is full throttle, it doesn't matter what he rides. Daniel Wedemeijer had some lines and tech moves that were different than what Kenneth had shown in his two runs and one last trick. Daniel even did a fufanu on a barrier that his buddies put there for a few seconds. His jumps into the cradle were sketchy to watch but they worked every time. His icepick on the wall was nuts. Tancré got the win over Wedemeijer and was awarded the black/yellow/red championship jersey in BMX Park Pro.
€250,= were up for grabs for the person who could bunny hop the highest. Not a bad pay for having 30 minutes of fun with your boys trying to jump your bike over a pole. If you know you can bunny hop 120cm or higher, you should visit the BBO in the future. Alex Vantomme grabbed the win for a 115cm bunnyhop.
Years and years ago, when BMX freestyle was nearly dead, we had 5 events on the calendar per year. We would meet the die-hards at those events. Nowadays there are 5 events happening in each weekend. Also the BBO had to suffer from this with multiple events taking place at the same weekend which distributes the riders over several happenings. Luckily the quality was still there, the weather was nice and the beertap was open. See you again in 2016.
