Following his spectacular ride along the roof of a skyscraper in Kiev in 2010, BMX star Vasya Lukyanenko recently took things to the next level as he headed for the Ukrainian National Space Centre in Yevpatoria to demonstrate his out-of-this-world bike skills on the huge radar dishes used to track satellites, explore neighbouring planets and even try to contact extra-terrestrial civilisations. Two years ago Vasya Lukyanenko had the locals in Kiev turning their eyes to the sky and gasping with amazement as he performed tricks on his BMX

bike hundreds of feet above the ground on the wave-shaped roof of a multi-storey building in the heart of the Ukrainian capital. Recently, however, the 21-year-old Ukrainian set his sights even higher – a lot higher, in fact.
Lukyanenko made his way to the National Spacecraft Control and Testing Centre outside the city of Yevpatoria on the Ukraine’s eastern coast for a BMX session unlike any other ever seen before. Built just a few months prior to Yuri Gagarin’s historic fight, the centre has over the years tracked numerous international space programmes investigating the surfaces of planets including the Moon and Venus Indeed, in 1999 its huge radar dishes were even used to transmit messages in search of possible extra-terrestrial civilisations.

It was these 16-metre-wide radars that attracted Lukyanenko’s attention as soon as he arrived at the remote location. With his BMX bike in one hand, he clambered onto one of the dishes and proceeded to perform a series of classic BMX tricks on the fully rotating platform.
“I’m always looking for new spots for to ride, but this one can’t be compared to anything,” smiled the Russian-born athlete as he peered over the edge.
“These dishes are just perfect for quality tricks, but you have to be really careful of the strong overhead wind. You can definitely feel that you are high up in the air while you are riding – after all, it’s about a 40-metre drop to the ground from here.” “For me BMX is more than just a hobby,” he continued after returning to terra firma.
“My
friends, my dreams – everything comes from my passion for BM?. I always want more! This project is special for me since the idea originated a few years ago. I still can’t believe I have actually done it!”By Red Bull
