But once the weather settled it turned into a great day of riding trails with the best riders in the world in front of a loud crowd. The two hour session with the twelve finalists kicked off with an intro run but the riding was turned up soon afterwards. The riders were feeding off of each other and with speeds reached over 30 miles per hour, the height the riders managed to pump out of the tall lips neared 40 feet in the air. That alone was insane but the Dreamline finalists were there for a competition and started throwing down tricks starting at the top of the hill. Paul Langlands had hammer runs and looked well on his way to a podium spot in Asheville. Jaie Toohey has a pump which sends him to the sky everytime and he's not afraid to throw big tricks like flip double whips over the biggest sets. One of the most stylish riders out there is Matt Cordova. His flow and kick outs are what trail riding is all about. He changed things up by doing lip slides on the berm in front of the judges. He was also looking at wall riding the judge tower but decided not to in the end. He walked away in one piece and was ultra stoked on making finals. Corey Bohan was Paul's number one in qualifying.
The Greenville, North Carolina BMX community lost a fellow BMXer and friend recently to a motorcycle accident. We got a bunch of the guys who were at Texas Toast (Vans team and others) on the weekend to sign a pair of limited edition Authentic shoes and you can bid for them now on Ebay. All proceeds go to Frankie Leggens’ family in this hard time.
Also there’s an account set up with Go Fund Me where you can donate any amount of money you can spare. Every cent helps out.
With Texas Toast happening this weekend more and more riders are rolling into town. Instead of sitting around doing nothing, the riders get straight to work and visit the local riding spots. And there's loads to ride around Austin. One park is a bit out of town but in Texas it's possible to load up the pick-up truck with bikes and people in the back so getting to the park isn't all that tough.
Pflugerville park is a bit north of Austin. The park is located in an open area with not much around. Plenty of space to expand if necessary but the concrete park that's there is actually big enough. It's got a bit of everything and also the bowl riders have nothing to complain about. An extra bowl was added so they can claim having the "biggest park of Texas". The Northeast Metro Skate/BMX Park opened Tuesday, September 18, 2012. Hours of operation are 8:00 am - 10:00 pm through November 30. December 1 through February 15, 2013, the skate/bmx park hours will be 8:00 am - 8:00 pm.
