The path isn't conventional, but it's real, and it's happening right now. The beauty of BMX career paths lies in their organic nature. Unlike corporate climbs or academic trajectories, BMX careers often start in bedrooms, garages, and local bike shops. Young riders who can't afford to find someone professional, like a paper writer for their college essays, are instead learning real-world business skills by managing their own Instagram accounts, negotiating sponsorship deals, and understanding supply chains through their desperate need for affordable parts. These aren't theoretical lessons; they're survival skills in a community where creativity and hustle matter more than credentials.
The New School Entrepreneurs
Take Scot Breithaupt, who founded SE Racing in 1977 and turned it into a major BMX brand. Breithaupt didn't start with a business plan or venture capital; he started with stickers, t-shirts, and an understanding of what riders actually wanted. His company grew from a small advertising and promotional operation into a full-scale bike manufacturer because he was embedded in the community he served.
USA BMX Introduces Lane Transfer System as an alternative to total points at National Series Events. USA BMX is implementing a format adjustment for all remaining 2025 USA BMX National Series events with the introduction of the Lane Transfer System (LTS). This update applies to all race classes besides expert categories who will continue utilizing lap times for gate selection in elimination rounds.
Specifically for Non-Elimination Class sizes with 4 to 8 riders this will improve event-day experience by speeding up the tabulation of results and accelerating the award redemption process, allowing families to exit the venue more efficiently.
What Is the Lane Transfer System?
Under this new format, riders will race in traditional transfer system rounds to qualify for the Main Event. The finish in the Main will determine the final standings for the race day, while the earlier rounds will be used exclusively to determine lane choice for the Main. The Lane Transfer System offers a straightforward, exciting race-day experience for all classes, while ensuring that every rider in a 4-8 rider class earns a spot in the Main.

Saturday 28 June will mark the 2025 edition of the Kooigem city battle. Taking place on the smallest BMX skatepark in one of Belgium's smallest city's, riders in teams of 2 will battle it out against each other. The idea is that you don't win from the judges, as there aren't any, but you win from the audience. After every run they decide what team goes on to the next stage. Some teams will be invited and pre qualified, but everyone can enter in the "normal run" contest, and the best riders then move on to the Quarter finals team contest.
