Happy 2015! Kicking off the year in high gear as we got with Vice Sports for a two part feature on Nigel Sylvester. Nigel has done BMX the only he knows how, love him or hate him, all he wants is to see his sport grow. By doing things his way he’s become one of the most polarizing figures as some are all about the kid from Queens but others in BMX don’t like his approach, this series will give you some insight into where he’s from, who he is and the sport of BMX.
Nigel Sylvester Taking on BMX (Part 1): Nigel Sylvester might be BMX's most recognizable figure, but his life and career are anything but typical of the sport. With several major endorsements, a clothing line and riding videos featuring the likes of French Montana and Pharrell, he has taken his brand far beyond the bike and garnered criticism for it along the way. Although he's constantly reminded of his presence in a predominately white sport, Nigel has injected his unique personality into BMX and found unparalleled success doing it. In Part 1, we go to Jamaica, Queens to see the people and places that shaped Nigel into the person and rider that he is.
During the wintertime it's tough for magazines to come up with content. It requires some good planning and a few trips to the sun. In issue 196 RIDE focuses on the Brighton Ain't Ready project where riders from all over the world came over to ride all spots in and around Brighton. Lloyd Wright got the cover doing an oppo whopper shot by Eisa Bakos. RIDE UK also celebrated their riders of the year awards by filling up the House Of Vans in London. Mad Jon, Dan Lacey, Matt Priest, Harry Main, the Source, Adrenaline Alley and BSD all picked up their trophies. Nike's Garrett Reynolds also got one but wasn't at the House Of Vans to pick it up in person but gets some coverage in the new issue anyway. The FOX BMX team went to Austin and the report is in #196. They shot guns 'n stuff. NRLY went to the sun in Barcelona while team Proper rolled the dice and stayed in the UK to do a trip. England's got plenty of indoor places these days so there's always a back up plan available.
