Imagine a very sick bikepark. A tailor-made park including all the sections you need to rise BMX limits to another level. Now imagine the same park fully covered in mirrors. Finally, imagine two of the best riders of the moment nailing tricks you might have never seen. Hard to believe? Also hard to turn it into reality. But it’s not a mirage, it’s absolutely true. It has happened somewhere near Pamplona in Spain and twelve months have been needed to make this possible.
One year throughout which, amongst other things, the Spanish rider with Nigerian origins, Courage Adams (22), has been one of the main responsibles of the thorough design of its sections. However, riding alone in this unique bikepark made no sense and it was a huge challenge. Besides, the first feeling he had once he saw the finished park was “it looks like a spacecraft. That place looked nothing similar to how it was before,” he pointed out.
The decisive moment had come. Courage invited German rider Paul Thölen (19), who came from his hometown Viersen exclusively for the occasion. “As soon as I saw the Mirror Park I thought it was surreal and that I wouldn’t be able to perform a single trick”, he confesses.
The trouble you have to face when riding on such a slippery Surface and facing your own reflections is extreme. Everything is complex and confusing. Stimulus are multiplied times one thousand and your surrounding becomes imprecise and uncertain, to the extent of getting dizzy and having to stop several times until you get back on track.
At the end of 1989 we got a little dirt spot in our home town of Aarle-Rixtel, NL. We decided to add another FATJAM to the schedule early in the year to open up the outdoor season. It was later dubbed the Mini FATJAM, a smaller version of the summer edition. This past Saturday the Mini FATJAM took place for the 29th time! One can say that the local council got their money's worth on dropping some truckloads of dirt at the Valkendijk. Once again the Sugar Hills locals did the digging and final preparation of the trails for the big day. With loads of rain last week, it was great to work on the sandy trails and when Saturday came around, it was a sunny day. Not only riders came out, but also the locals with their Bavaria's and even the AAA (Aarlese A-sociale Amerikanen club) did a drive by with their American cars.
Riders were pushing themselves to their absolute limits and showcasing their best tricks to the huge crowd! Over 86,000 people attended the 3 day event. 8 women representing 6 different nations made it to the UCI BMX Freestyle Park World Cup Women’s final and what a final it was. The women were split into 2 groups of 4 and had 2 runs each to throw down their best tricks. The standard was super high and all the women shredded the whole course with style. Angie Marino’s impressive run looked set to get her the top spot on the podium but she was denied the win by fellow American Hannah Roberts. Hannah landed everything she attempted and covered the whole course throwing tricks until the very last second.

After a massive battle between riders in the semi-final the stage was set for an awesome Men’s UCI BMX Freestyle Park World Cup. The leader from qualifying Alex Colborn one of the competitions most technical riders, usually an expert in lip tricks missed one of his signature tricks and ended up in 6th place. We’re delighted to be landing in Japan just in time to catch the cherry blossom season. Hiroshima looks magical and the historic location of the event makes this FISE stop feel extra special. We kicked off with the Women’s UCI BMX Freestyle Park World Cup Semi Final. Riders have 2 runs of 60 seconds to wow the judges but it's only the best run that counts. With BMX Freestyle Park being added as a competition in 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, riders are trying to push forward and progress their sport more than ever and some of the riding was insane. The line-up for the women’s event was amazing with riders representing from all over the world, but no one could stop last year’s winner 16-year-old Hannah Roberts taking first place. Be sure to tune in tomorrow at 11.10 to see if anyone can stop Hannah adding another gold medal to her growing collection.

After a rainy day on Friday the UCI BMX Park World Cup continued on Saturday. The Elite Men class turned into a semi-final with 78 riders. The cut to 12 riders for Sunday's final was touch but these are the results. Make sure to tune in on Sunday to watch the finals live.
