Action moved to the vert ramp for the BMX Vert Finals at the LG Action SPorts Championships in Dallas. Thirteen riders took two runs each -- the larger field was due to no pre qualifier—but the day was all about Jamie Bestwick. Big air and big tricks earned him his 4th Action Sports Championship title. In second Simon Tabron nailed a big 900, and Chad Kagy scored third, despite a crash that ended his day early.
The BMX street finals proved to be one of the highlights of the second day of the LG Action SPorts championships. It was not a runaway for Daniel Dhers like many had predicted, as he had some stiff competition. In his second run, local boy Morgan Wade threw down a flawless run, using the entire course and including several dangerous high speed transfers.
Once the doors opened to the public at six, the action remained on the street course for BMX prelims. The field was divided into two heats of ten, both extremely competitve. Riders were scored in a two-run, best run counts format. In the first heat, 17-year-old Garrett Reynolds threw down a solid score of 87 in his first run. Second run he proved it was no fluke, matching his first run score. His 87 would hold through the first heat as the high score. When the next ten riders took to the course, Reynolds's score would prove tough to beat, that is, until Daniel Dhers dropped in. With his smooth and powerful style, Dhers linked together banger after banger to post an 88, and finish the day qualified in first. Local boy Morgan Wade qualified in third. His runs were so powerful, that even a fall on a giant gap to rail was barely apparent in his score.
Once a year in San Francisco there is a snowboarding and ski event called Icer Air. On the usual bill are live bands, a huge snow jump and a vert demo. The folks at Icer Air tasked Ramp Rats owner Mike Krnaich to build a park and run a skate bmx comp at this years event.
The best riders in street BMX came from across the country to battle it out at the Red Bull Down & Dirty contest, but it was a team of underground locals that wowed them all. Four riders from the New England area –Dave Belcher, Pat “Lumpy” Laughlin, Augie Simoncini and Darryl Tocco combined their efforts to pull off some of the biggest tricks of the day to win $4000. Lumpy also pocketed an extra $1500 for the Zoo York Best Trick – a Backwards Derek Duster Inward 180 Out on the rail. In keeping with the street theme, all prize money was given away in cash – one dollar bills to be exact.
Good and wild things were going on at the Baco-a-go-go at the Mesh Park around Halloween. People dressed up, rode and had a good time. Nothing wrong with that. A BMX contest without a tattoo gun seems to be impossible these days. Not sure if that's the right combination as people will wake up in the morning hoping it was only a dream. Serious hangover. Morgan Wade won the pro comp followed by 49 other pros.
After doing a BMX 'zine for ten years (1987 - 1996) FATBMX made it on the internet. The year was 1998. Here to stay.
