Australian Olympian and former BMX World Champion Caroline Buchanan has fired the first warning shot on the road to Rio by winning round one of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Santiago del Estero, Argentina. After finishing second by four one hundredths of a second in yesterday’s time trial, 25-year-old Buchanan returned to the track today to lead every single lap contested from the motos to final, inevitably beating home world time trial champion Mariana Pajon and Dutch rider Laura Smulders in the final.
The 2016 UCI BMX World Cup series is the gateway to the Olympic games for BMX racers, so the 2016 season is the most important races for a rider looking to make their way into the games. The Chase BMX Pro team headed into the year with the World Cups as their main focus, along with the USA BMX events and the season is now upon us. Stop #1 would take the team to Argentina, and Connor Fields, Joris Daudet, Romain Mahieu, and Stefany Hernandez would all take to the event with winning the main event as their goal.
Corben Sharrah (Tucson, Ariz./Dalight Cycle Co) and Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev./Chase BMX/Monster Energy) went 1 and 2 in the main event on Saturday at round one of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Argentina. After winning their respective quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, the two Americans made it to the final along with compatriot Nic Long (Lakeside, Calif./Haro Bikes/Dans Comp). Sharrah had a strong start out of gate four and powered his way to the win ahead of Fields who had gate number one. Amidou Mir of France rounded out the podium and Long was seventh.
Two Americans made it to the women’s main – Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif./Hara Bikes/Dans Comp) and Alise Post (St. Cloud, Minn./Redline USA), who placed sixth and seventh behind winner Caroline Buchanan (AUS).
On Friday, riders contested the time trial super final where Alise Post made the podium with third place in a time of 34.637. Fields
