Martin takes second at 2013 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Papendal

Jun 17, 2013
Arielle Martin (East Spanaway, Wash./Intense BMX) earned her first podium of the 2013 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup season on Sunday in Papendal, Netherlands, after riding to a second-place finish in the elite women’s final. After finishing third in her semifinal heat to move into the finals, Martin got off to a fast start behind Mariana Pajon (COL). But Pajon, yesterday’s superfinal time trial winner, held the front for the duration of the race to sweep the weekend while Martin kept pace to secure silver. Lauren Reynolds (AUS) finished third, more than a second and a half behind Martin.

Alise Post (Saint Cloud, Minn./Redline Bicycles) also made the supercross final, but finished fifth after crashing into a downed rider on the finishing straight. Both Martin and Post won two of three qualifying motos in their respective groups to advance to the semifinals. Dani George (Palmdale, Calif./Supercross BMX) did not advance beyond the qualifying heats after finishing fifth in her group.

Mariana Pajon and Jelle van Gorkom win UCI BMX Supercross Papendal World Cup #3 2013. Pics by BdJ

Jun 17, 2013
It was a great day for BMX Racing in Papendal for the third stop of the 2013 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup series. Also a great day for Mariana Pajon who won the Elite women’s event and a great day for homeboy Jelle van Gorkom. For both riders it was the first ever Supercross win. With this win Pajon from Columbia, who already is Olympic Champion and World Champions, completed her Grand Slam. Van Gorkom was also ecstatic as he proved he is able to win world cups after he seriously crashed last year spring and could not prove his quality at the Olympics.

2013 BMX Holland Race - Papendal/Arnhem (NED). By BdJ

Jun 16, 2013
Things are about to change regarding the Time Trials in 2014. It's like watching paint dry, so a change is very welcome. But for this year the time trials are a separate race and a way to qualify the top 64 riders for Sunday's BMX Supercross program. But in Papendal, those who did not make the top 64 had a chance to participate in a race. This is good in a few ways. 1) The track, medics, and staff is there anyway. So bring it on. 2) It will give the racers who flew in from far, a way to race a BMX SX track to gain some more experience. 3) It will finally speed up the excitement for the crowd.
