The World Championships are one event you can focus on as a BMX racer. You can follow training schedules from your personal trainer all year long to be the strongest you can be at this weekend. But things can go wrong quickly. Traveling to a different part of the world can mess things up. Being bit by a spider is something you never thought of when you were working out in that gym all winter long. A little slip, a little case, an unexpected elbow or simply one bad gate and the race is over. But it feels good when everything works out

The 2010 UCI BMX Race Worlds have come to an end. Riders from all over the place made it down to South Africa to battle for a world championship title in the Junior and Elite classes. You've seen the results by now and if you're really into it, you've watched the racing behind your computer screen here on FATBMX. But the person who kept you updates with videos, photos and reports from South Africa was Lloyd Ramsay. Here's another photo report from the South African with a few more coming up. Props to him.

The Elite and Junior Championship Class competitions are the highlight of the UCI BMX World Championships and for what may have been the first time for the Americans, on Saturday it was all about the ladies. Nineteen-year-old Alise Post (Saint Cloud, Minn./Redline Bicycles) earned the bronze medal in the elite women's contest and Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif./Clayborn-Monster Energy) just missed the junior women's world title, finishing second. In the elite women's final at the Royal Showgrounds in

It was a case of call back the past when Latvian Maris Strombergs and Briton Shanaze Reade reclaimed the UCI BMX World Championship men's and women's titles respectively in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday - but the real hero for the partisan South African crowd was men's runner up Sifiso Nhlapo. For the local crowd the men's final result was a bitter sweet conclusion to the day's racing as they celebrated Nhlapo's silver medal with the thought about how close he came to pulling off the biggest

The second day of racing in the UCI BMX World Championships saw the landscape of the challenger classes reshaped by several moments of high drama that saw medal contenders crash out of contention in a day of thrilling racing dominated by France, Australia and the United States in front of packed stands under overcast skies. The 14 Girls main final was shaken in the first few seconds by a massive crash at the foot of the start ramp that took out the two girls who had dominated the class from the first moto, New Zealander Hannah Sarten and Australian Harriet Burbridge-Smith.

Day 3 is in the books. The weather forecast looks like rain for tomorrow as the younger riders start their racing. The track crew started to cover the final straight when I left but hopefully the weatherman is wrong. Pietermaritzberg has not seen rain in quite a while so it might be a good thing to wash all the dust out of the air as well as the ash from all the grass fires. Each day more and more elite riders appear around the track. Its a pity that riders like Mike Day and defending champ Donnie Robinson are injured but

UCI BMX Worlds is underway as practice started today. The first straight claimed a few riders and a paramedic told me 3 stretchered off and 2 of those are in hospital. The first double jump on the second straight is proving to be tricky as its easy to over jump it. I only saw a few people try take on the third straight at full speed. All the riders who like to bump the start gate to throw people off must be bummed at the individual gate set up. After the call that sucker drops fast! I saw some well known elite riders hovering

Everyone should have landed by now but some bikes and parts are still floating around the world. Its awesome that you look around the pits and see people from Japan, Canada and the UK all here in South Africa to race some BMX. Weather looks good, track looks real good as the final work is being done to it. Nobody was allowed anywhere near it which was frustrating for several riders who made a trip to the track to have a look. It does not make sense to have people walking all over the track right now but I think they should have at least been allowed to the fence to have a look and film the straights. Special thanks to Simon Keijzer for allowing me up onto the start hill to shoot some photos for Fatbmx. The track builders do an awesome job for sure and the jumps look so perfect right now you almost don't want anyone to ride over them. Registration is now out the way for most people and practice starts tomorrow.
The event program has a photo of mine and the flyer that came with the riders plates has two more. Several people got photo credits
