Americans Donny Robinson (Napa, Calif.) and Arielle Martin (Pleasant Grove, Utah) finished third overall in the 2009 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup series following the fourth and final round in Frejus, France. In the fourth round final Robinson finished second, behind Australia’s Sam Willoughby in the main, to secure third in the overall series. Martin finished third in Saturday’s main behind series winner Latetia le Corguille (FRA) to grab third in the final standings.
“I was not too happy with the way I was riding and Maris, Sam and Khalen were all incredibly fast” said Robinson. “I did not have second place speed today. So l am happy with my result thanks to some good positioning and smart riding.”
Following Robinson’s second-place finish, the only other American to make the main in Frejus was last year’s winner David Herman (Wheat Ridge, Colo.), finishing sixth. Click here for complete results from the
fourth and final round of the 2009 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Frejus, France.
World champion Robinson, who did not compete in the series’ first round, collected 479 points to the current Junior World Champion Willoughby’s 672 and Ivo Van Der Putten’s 514 to finish third in the overall. The next American male in the final series standings was Nicholas Long (Lakeside, Calif.) in 10th with 350 points. Click here for complete men’s 2009 BMX Supercross World Cup final standings.
Martin was the only American woman to make the main, using her third-place finish in the Frejus final to grab third-place overall. Martin also pulled off a third-place result in the third round in Chula Vista, Calif. despite a broken hand which also helped propel her to the overall podium.
“I am very happy with third place," said Martin. “I was injured not too long ago; actually my hand is still broken. So I did not get a lot of training done lately. Only the last few weeks I was back on the bike.”
Youngsters Alise Post (St. Cloud, Minn.) and Brook Crain (Visalia, Calif.) finished ninth and 13th in the final standings to give the U.S. women strong hope for the future. Click here to view the complete women’s 2009 BMX Supercross World Cup final standings.
