Well, with what feels like just 5 minutes since the last/first one, the dsab Livi BMX jam had reared its ugly, unfashionable head again for what is now an annual appearance at the world (in)famous Livingston Skatepark in Scotland. Tight jeans need not apply. I awoke late, so had to brake a few speed limits and skip straightening my hair in order to get there reasonably early enough to help set up. Alas, even after my sterling effort, everything was set up when I got there. Yes, I’m a total chatebag.
With nothing left to do but kick back with one of the many free red bulls on offer and chat to people I hadn’t seen in a long while this jam was fully underway and shaping up nicely. Having a howl and catching up with old friends in thee greatest skatepark on the planet is no bad thing. The rain stayed off and everything!
In typical dsab fashion the time keeping was completely non existent and things just happen when we god damn feel like it! After a few relaxed warm up sessions it seemed like the right time to try the first of our fun challenges, the bars backwards comp!
If I am completely honest this didn’t go any where near as good as last year. Last time around people were doing 180 whips to disaster, back flips and back rail ice picks! This year however people were more interested in having a social gathering, a box social if you will, so it’s no wonder the eventual winner of the comp was Victor Bulgaria…with an X-up. Think we still owe you some prizes Vic el son!
Next in line was the ‘Wan Fitter Best Trick’ (One footer competition, for those not up to date with the Scottish lingo). Basically, if you’ve ever been to Livi you will know the park is full of old timey, weird transitions and at the very top of the park is a super tight 1ft tranny which was to be used as the ‘fly’ out for this particular comp. If you’ve never ridden it you have no idea how hard it is to do ANYTHING! It would have been easier riding full force into a small brick wall and trying some tricks out of that. Many stunts were attempted, some were even landed. I saw a few x-ups, barspins, 180’s and some one handed/footed variations aswell as a bad ass 540 bitch tap from hell! 10 points for originality son but in the end it was Burt Reynolds, I mean Joe Pro with a super low and hyper fast tailwhip for the win! No idea how you’re supposed to do a tailwhip to the pedals let alone that quick and low. I also don’t know how you win a comp at a dsab jam with a fucking tailwhip! That proves how mental it truly was.
Riding during the next short break resulted in disaster for me. When jumping one of the many hips, a young rider decided to drop-in in front of me, causing a mighty ankledeath collision and resulted in the breaking of my ankle with possible surgery needed! Thanks mate, next time an apology might be the polite thing to do.
I tried to hang about and commentate a bit before driving myself to the hospital (don’t ever work a clutch with a broken ankle) and managed to catch the ‘dsab doubles tag team’ before I left.
This basically involved two or more people trying to perform one trick in the form of bike passes, transfers, stalls etc and obviously the best trick ‘wins’. Again the majority of the jam attendants chose to sit and watch as the formidable teams of Shane Prodizzle and Capn Colin squared off against Paul ‘Sword’ Donnachie and Fraz ‘Cuddles’ Watt (a.k.a Glasgow not so young team) After many failed bike transfers, handlebar abubaca attempts and rather pathetic footplant variations the decision was unanimous…Ginger Pete Gallacher won for his joyful interruption in the form of a huge 360 out of the park and over the fence. Nae Bad.
Things mellowed out once more before the final event of the day, the Tank and Yank Tournament! Out the flatbank, over a height pole, land. It’s that simple but oh so fun! This quickly became a 4 horse race between the Ginger blur, B-Rad, Joe Pro and eh…someone else. Point is that B-rad took the win with a crazy high pop out the bank clearing something like 9ft of air. The video footage unfortunately does not do it justice. Fuck sake Alan.
Moments later the heavens opened and everyone bailed to their vehicles in order to get back to Glasgow for the obligatory drinking session(s).
It may have been the most chilled out jam ever but the vibe was a positive one and I know for sure that the Livi Jam will be back again and I will be there to enjoy it again, hopefully with some slightly more advanced planning next year!

Jam was Rad! There actually was some normal riding as well like trucks, 360 whips, t-bog airs, etc but thats not the DSAB way. Roll on next year for more relaxed BMX... so relaxed most of the riders sat on their arse !!!
